I bought just one Assassin Snail and after about 4 days of it being in my tank it has started laying eggs! Is it possible that it could have gotten pregnant before i bought it?? We only have 1 Assassin Snail so it can't breed.

Eggs can be laid without any pregnancy or mating involved. If they are unfertilized then they will not hatch into snails.
Production of eggs isn't anything more than a sign of sexual maturity in a female. So the only thing you can get from seeing an Assassin egg in your tank if you only have one Assassin is that it is a mature female.

Matt, thanks for starting this informative thread and also for directing me to it. I've learned a lot from y'all -- as usual.

When, indeed. (It is very kind of you to ask.) I was hoping to get over there this week, but it has been too busy. The weekend is another insanely busy one too, so perhaps next week.
Well, based on Brhino’s experiences:
I may purchase just one, possibly two. During my PWC, I manually removed half a dozen pond snails easily enough.
I don’t mind the pond snails if they are eating algae and contributing to the overall health and adding to the diversity I’d like to establish. That said, I do not want hundreds of any kind of snail. I’d certainly enjoy having one just like that huge pretty one in your tank Matt, but that’s another line of thinking.

Where are you thinking of buying them from?....this guy has tons of them, I've bought from him before, great deal: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...=116142&page=3
I'd start with at least 3...I started with 7, probably don't have any baby ones yet...mine hide in the sand most of the time,,,I still only see 2 or 3 at a time
