  1. Default Sexing Bloodfin/Rosyfin Tetra

    0 Not allowed!
    Hi guys,

I have currently got 6 of these tetras and I am trying to work out how many males and females I have. So how do I sex them?

For example...Is this one a male or female?

And how does it look health-wise?

    Rosy Fin Tetra.jpg

    Kind regards,
    Rich

While I have not sexed these particular tetras, with most tetras there is a difference in body shape, in particular the thickness of the body between the males and the females.

The females will be slightly rounder in the pelvic to anal fin area of the body for holding eggs.

Based on that, your photo in my opinion is either a very thin female or a male.

btw... this is definitely not a bloodfin tetra. (Though I'd not be surprised if the pet store did label it as such)

I believe what you have is either a Hyphessobrycon bentosi / Ornate Tetra OR a Hyphessobrycon rosaceus / Rosy Tetra

+ 1 to Trillianne's good eyes that is indeed H. rosaceus (no shoulder patches) and it is a male, the hooks in the anal fin ID it.

    Healthwise; he looks very healthy.

I tend to divide my tetras into the "narrow body" like neons, cardinals, etc and the "wide bodies" like serpae, columbia, skirts, etc.

    Bloodfins are a narrow body.

I used to keep them, and they are pretty hardy and fairly well available around these parts.

I think they are the most enjoyable in the mornings... when they spawn. The ladies leap above the water when scattering their eggs. Never saw any come to fruition, but lots of spawning behavior.

Sadly, the selection of tetras in South Africa is quite limited.

Having just looked at several pictures of the African ones I would have to say that I have never seen a single variant in any pet store here.
