    So long as you are monitoring them closely, you can wait and see if they are a pair. To be honest, its not very likely - folks usually have to purchase a half dozen angels in order to find a pair, but if you are keeping an eye on them you should be able to intervene if things go south. Just have a plan b ready to go right away...sometimes, with cichlids, things can change fast - if you aren't paying attention, you can go to bed thinking things are hunky dory, but wake up to a floater...

    There is a slim chance that you could have a pair. I got lucky in that way, buying just two angels a month apart. But as everyone has said, keep close watch. If they do pair up, you may still see some "fighting" behaviors from time to time. Mine would do a lot of lip-locking just before spawning and right after. The rest of the time was peaceful.

    even with pairs, males will chase females to maintain dominance. therefore, on/off chasing with breaks and seemingly peaceful interactions in between could indicate a pairing, while relentless chasing and
    significant fin damage likely means no pair.
