Ooops, sorry I messed up the link, thanks for fixing it FT...

2kids, I had a very similar experience with what you are facing, when I was a complete beginner, here is the thread if you are interested; lots of good info and help I was given: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...d.php?t=111494

If you have not already done so, I would suggest you do some more reading up on the nitrogen cycle and cycling your tank. Just in case you are not sure of exactly what happened I will try to explain. You mentioned that you ran the tank for 4 days while adding fish food. I believe you were trying to cycle your tank if I am not mistaken. However, I would imagine that the fish food would not have even began to produce ammonia 'till the 2nd or 3rd day, and add that to the fact that ammonia has to be present for a week or so for the first part of the nitrogen cycle to start. After that the slighlty less toxic nitrates start rising, while ammonia level lowers to 0 ppm. Then comes the much less toxic Nitrite which is where water changes are needed. This process generally takes around a month to fully complete.

So... here is what you can do to help solve this problem that has been created, and also help to maintain the Nitrogen Cycle and the beneficial bacteria. :D

    • Make certain that you have a good biological filter, and that you know how to maintain your beneficial bacteria without killing it off. If your aquarium came with a unsuitable filter, and you are willing to purchase a better one I would reccomend Aquaclear. They are cheaper than canister filters yet offer similar appeal because of the large meda basket. And thank goodness they do not come with a cartridge. (Long story short, cartridges generally cause you to have a very unstable aquarium.) Anyway you don't actually need to replace the media unless it is falling apart. Just give it a good wash in tank water every month or so. (Excluding carbon and very fine mechanical media like filter floss)
•Regular water changes. For now try to perform them as often as needed to keep the ammonia at .25 or less.
    • Test the water, especially during the cycle! In a stable aquarium you only need to test he water every week or so, or if something seems wrong.)
    • Add fish very gradually and do not overstock. (Hopefully your fish you have at the moment will not die off) I like the surface area rule. (Just google it. :D )
    • Only add compatible fish. Do your research before buying, don't impulse buy! It can come back to haunt you! :P
For instance your pH seems a litttle to high for Amazon native fish such as Neon Tetras. I am sure that was not the main cause of their death but just keep in mind of that. Also Neon tetras need a school of 6+ minimum. For your pH livebearers would be a good choice. They are hardy(a great beginner fish, and can handle higher pH.
    • Having live plants can help with Nitrites, but it isn't too important. I just love planted tanks.
    • Don't buy fish from a poorly maintained tank.

I apologize for writing a novel in this reply section, but I tend to do that. I will omit my signature so it won't be as painfully long.

Thanks I will continue to read. Another water change and appear to below .25. Yay. I think the store we purchased from was on the right track to try and start tank right. They did not have all the correct info. Live and learn. Some fish were lost in the process. :( Sorry Nemo, Heidi Shell, Scampi and Shrimpy.

LOL, you don't have to read the whole thing, but that is where I learned how to keep a healthy and happy tank...then, of course, I had to have one of my own, hence the 40B in my sig...be warned, this hobby is very addictive

Finally making progress. I found a local hobby shop that was helpful. They tested my water and offered advice along the way. Finally have levels correct. I purchased the API test kit and have been monitoring along the way. Finally 0 ammonia for a few weeks. We added 4 Zebra Danios yesterday. I plan on checking water later today.
