To those of you with AquaClear 70 HOB filters, I have a quick question: how much room does it take in order for the filter waterfall to clear the tank lid?
In other words, what is the minimum depth of the gap in the tank lid needed to accomodate an AC70, as it hangs on the tank wall? I know about 4" is needed behind the tank wall, but what about in front of it? I can't find any useful info on the internet, just dimensions of the actual unit itself.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

1 1/4" the lid would touch the filter....I've allowed 1 1/2" for my tank lid. Hope that helps!

2The lip on my 70 is 1.25 inches...but I'm not sure why you are worried about the water hitting the lid?
I have my glass butting right up against the lip and there is no water contacting the lid. My filter is at full "tilt", the black adjustment at the base of the the filters is flush with the unit, not twisted out so that the filter is level. Tho I can't see that water would contact the tank lid even if the filter was level.
Having said that, the lip of the overflow is 3/4" below the glass...so if your tank size doesn't allow the lip of the overflow to be below the glass I can see where you'd have issues.

You probably will have to cut a slot out of the plastic to get the AC filter to slide into place. I think the slot I cut in my plastic is about an 1 1/2". No worries. When in doubt, do a water change.
