  1. Default New Filter Cartridge?

    0 Not allowed!
So I've had my aquarium for roughly 6 months now and for the past while I've noticed my filter flow has been weird. More water comes out of the small overflow spout than the large post filter spout. It's like maybe the filter cartridge is becoming clogged and not allowing proper filtering.

If I recall, a sticky post mentioned not replacing the cartridge, just washing it out in tank water. But is this a sign that I need to replace it now, or is this normal behavior? If it does need replacing, how do I go about that without screwing up my cycle?

    Thanks in advance.

Depends a bit on which filter it is. If there's a single cartridge then replacing it would effectively reset the tank. See if there's a way to take the sponge out so you can clean that in some old tank water.

Its normal for flow to get shunted to the overflow portion of a filter when it gets gunky. Clean it out in treated water (unless you are on a well) and put it back. You can also look into using loose biomedia and a sponge and/or floss in place of the cartridge.

As talldutchie said, it depends on your type of filter. If there is room to have the old sponge placed somewhere in the filter which has water flowing through it, you could place a new filter pad in the proper spot and leave the clogged pad in the filter to house your BB until the new pad is settled. If you have duel filter pads (side by side style), you can replace one this month and one the next keeping an eye on your test results and when necessary, doing a water change.
The best bet right now is to get some tank water into a clean bucket and wring out that filter pad until it looks cleaner if you can.
The reason I like to have two filters on my tank is that I can replace what I need in one filter while the other does the work for awhile. A combination of HOB and cannister work really well for this. Each filter rated more then tank capacity.

My filter is an AquaTech 40, so it just has the one filter, although it does have that black bio filter thing in it after the regular pad. I have tried cleaning the pad but didn't detach it from the mold because theirs are permanently attached somehow (I think). I might be able to try and get it loose so I can give it a more thorough cleaning to try and get it unclogged. Otherwise I thing I might be able to pull of keeping the pad part in the filter along with a replacement.

Let me ask this, though. Would it hurt if I just leave it as it is? Or do I need to get it fixed?

To clean the cartridge if its the "flat" type, get a bucket (one for fish only) and remove tank water into it. Pop the cartridge in submerged and rub your hands against both sides gently, but thoroughly, then several times press it between your hands compressing it as best you can. I have one tank with an aquarion filter with the long flat cartridge, and these things are notoriously bad. After about six weeks, mine start to fall apart.

Because of this problem, on that tank I installed an air pump driven sponge filter, as well as an Aquaclear mini, that I filled with two layers of cut filter foam and then whacked a load of bio beads in. You may want to consider the same, or one or the other, so when you have to replace said cartridge, you aren't losing your cycle.

Or you could just replace your filter with an appropriately sized AC HOB or a canister filter and stop worrying about the cartridges.

Apparently I wasn't being vigorous enough when cleaning the cartridge. I had another go with, this time following Tiari's method. I really swished and rubbed hard with the filter and when done it was so much lighter. I couldn't believe the crap I poured out of that bucket. Things are filtering perfectly now.
