  1. Default lone Black Corydoras Schultzei, get more of the same or can I just mix them up?

I had 6 baby Black Corydoras Schultzei that I won at a local fish auction in my 4'x2' footprint 110gal. planted community tank.

I had some sort of sickness or disease go through the tank and wipe out a lot of my fish, leaving me with one lone "very plump" black cory cat.

They seemed happy when I had 6 but honestly they never displayed any schooling behavior.

I contacted the breeder in an attempt to get more but I haven't heard back from him.

My lfs has some nice reticulated cory cats, some listed as San Juan, etc... none of them are cheap, like $7-12 each.
Petsmart/ petco have some ranging from $3.50-8 each

I was thinking if I can't get more Schultzei for him to chum around with maybe I should just mix it up and buy a different cory cat every time I go to the pet store and put them in quarantine, or will I just have a bunch of lonely cory cats missing their mates then? I mean would it be better to get 4-6 of a single other kind for him to chum with?

also this in a 110 gal, neutral ph, 78.5 degrees ...

they will share the bottom of the tank with 4 Bolivian Rams

    any suggestions?

In my experience cory cats of different kinds will not often school or even shoal with one another. They will occasionally but they do recognize the differences between each sub-species or what have you.

I had a similar situation not long ago with some peppered cory. While cory cats are schooling fish it is not necessary to keep them with others of their own kind. He will act differently than if there were others and he might experience a greater degree of stress but in truth he will survive on his own if you are unable to find more.

If I were you though, I'd try to pick a specific species of cory to stick with. They are really a joy to watch when they are in a group. They are a lot more lively.

EDIT: My school of green cory share the bottom with GBR's and occasionally the GBR will "school" with the cory. It's pretty funny and kind of fun to watch so your Bolivian's should be fine with them for sure.

I have two species of corydoras (peppered and sterbai) in a similar sized tank and they do not school together. They are different species so will always be better with their own kind.

That depends on whether you would like them to thrive or just to survive.

Ok thanks, I'm at petco and they have was I assume are false julii's for $3.50 each, I'm going to go look at petsmart and see what they got,

The false juliis look nice and are schooling in the petshop tank, not sure what to think, I know they're common but attractive and affordable

False juliis are nice, and they stay pretty small. You could try getting 6 or so of those and at least see if your black cory likes them... At worst, you have more cories and he just isn't interested. You could also look for salt-and-pepper cories, the dark blotches might interest him and get him to school with them.
I'd say that it actually is necessary to keep cories with other cories, if you can. I have a single cory at the moment (he's going to be re-homed very soon, don't worry) and he just isn't happy. He sort of sits around a lot and seems to be too skittish for a cory, not normal behavior at all. He's not sick, though.
I hate hearing people say "it's only a $3/$5/$1 fish/shrimp, so it's ok if it dies, I can just get another." It's still an animal! All animals should be treated like they're worth $10,000.

We do our best to keep out schools at the proper levels, sometimes we just are not able to restock our tanks for whatever reason. While your Cory will not be compleatly happy being alone, you should still stock your tank with other Cory's until you find more of his/her kind.

Black Schultzei in fact is a Aeneus-species as bronze, lasers, Schultzei. Think they will shoal with all these closely related species, but will crossbreed as well !!! If you're not wanting to breedand you can't get Black Schultzei I'd take some of these others. I am keeping 5 different Aeneus species (seperated).

No one would help me at petco, so i left empty handed.

I wanted to buy those cories that were labeled spotted corries @$3.50, but then I found more in another tank labeled Julii corries @$4.50, so honestly I wasn't as excited if they're higher priced.

I know it's only a buck but at $4.50 they're closer in price to rarer ones I might like more at another shop.

I asked 2 employees and both said they would get someone, stood there for half hour, then she came over and ignored me so I got mad and left.

Got home and had a email from the black cory cat breeder saying he could hook me up after xmas,

So I'm glad it worked out, or will work out.

Yup, which I pretty much in the rest of the post. Thanks for summarizing in a much less wordy fashion.
