I think it would be preferable to go with the larger cannister. I had an Eheim Pro 3 (rated for up to 600 litres) on a 120 litre tank. Now THAT was over-filtered.

The 2217 is good for your your tank along with an Hob. I had that same set up on my 55 when it was running. I used the HOB for additional mechanical filtration and the canister primarily for bio and chem. Africans are messy, even the smaller species. They like to spit out there food all over the place. If your flow gets to be too high, which I doubt it will, you can always drill the spraybar or make a longer spraybar. Additionally, you can lessen the outflow rate with the doubletap valves. ( I use that in addition to an altered spraybar for my Multi (African Tang) tank( That one has the 2215-works like a champ.)

Thanks for the input guys! Looks like I'm getting a new 2217! It will be my present to myself for Christmas this year.
I'll let you know how it goes!

Fine choice, and do let us know how it works out for you....TBH, I was a bit apprehensive myself about putting the 2215 (93 gallon) on my 40 gallon tank, concerned about too much flow buffeting my fish around, but it is perfect....love that filter
Big Al's has lots of great deals and monthly specials, that is where I bought most of my stuff for my 40 gallon build.

That is a pretty good deal. If you have questions on set up, priming, etc. let us know.

Yeah, the instruction manual that comes with the filter leaves ALOT to be desired, just post back when you are ready to set it up and we'll help, like Jeff said

Yeah, it is a classic, and a really great deal. I got free shipping, and loyalty points for registering which was an immediate 15 bucks off the already low price. I usually don't buy online because I'm very impatient, but I didn't even see Eheims in my LFS' in the area.
I have seen a lot of gripes online about the manual. I may be back in here with an emergency post come installation time. Someone wrote that they had to 'think German' to understand the manual. lol
With that much filtration, should I still keep one of my HOB filters on it too? I'm thinking yes because I'm going towards the 'overstocked' African method. And they do seem to be pooping all the time. Much more than my barbs and tetras in my other tank. Probably no need for a power head either, right?
Thanks again for the link. I probably saved about 50 bucks.

No problem..the manual is terrible, you will see, but it is not difficult at all to set up..yeah, you can keep the HOB on there, extra filtration never hurts...and I would not think you'll need a powerhead
