Beef heart preparation questions
First off, I have read quite a bit on the net about beef heart and it gets some 'interesting' reviews. Do you, or would you feed your fish it?
I feel that I have some fish who really like and probably need a meatier diet. Some of you may have seen my other thread on making my own fish food here: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...d.php?t=115047
That went really well and I can see a visual enhancement of my fish's well being. However as this food did contain a high ratio of veg I want to make a 'meat bomb' cubes that I can feed maybe once a week or two weeks to satisfy those that crave meat.
A lot of internet recipes say about egg yolk, flake, and about 20 other ingredients. I always prefer simple options.
I was going to go for;
Shredded beef heart
That should keep it nice and simple, yet meaty.
Please add any experience you have had with this food :)

I feed frozen beef heart cubes on occasion and it is messy, you will need to use gelatin or agar. IIRC beef heart has a pretty high fat content, so you might wanna not use too much. I think the egg yolk is a great idea. You could always mix in some raw fish too or crab. If it were me I would add some spirulina and vitamins as well. More never hurts.
Your making me want to get into making my own fish food again.Who is "General Failure" and why is he reading my hard drive?

I considered using the egg yolk. Egg yolk and perhaps some vitamins are all I would really want to add. How often did you feed it to your fish Scrup?My therapist says I need a bigger tank . . . . .

When I kept Mbuna I fed them once a day, sometimes once every other day. Currently I feed all my fish every other day, except the crayfish. They tend to eat each other if they get hungry.Who is "General Failure" and why is he reading my hard drive?

I never have seen the point in feeding beefheart to fish. It's nothing remotely resembling a natural diet, yet it's a fairly popular food, particularly among discus enthusiasts. I just can't picture a school of wild discus (or any other cichlid for that matter) tearing apart a cow...
Never used it myself, I feed a staple diet of NLS 1mm cichlid or .5mm grow pellets, veggie flake w/spirulina once or twice a week. Occasionally canned green beans, you'd be surprised at how many fish tear those up. Same diet for everything from BN pleco's to SA, CA, and African cichlids to silver dollars and cherry shrimp.
