  1. Default Cycle question (new tank)

    0 Not allowed!
10 gallon tank, fishless cycle. Set everything up on 23 Nov with 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate, 8.4 pH. After giving up on finding ammonia I added a frozen shrimp. I added Cycle for the 1st 3 days. Have the heater set to around 82 and an airstone going along with the filter. Within 3-4 days ammonia was at 2, nitrite was almost 1, and nitrates had climbed to 15.

Ammonia started back down (.5), nitrites had reached 5, and nitrates were up to 30 on the 28th (5 days later). I took the shrimp out and replaced it with another one. Since then my nitrates have been around 10 and ammonia is either 0 or .25. I took the shrimp out and fed some food to try and keep the BB alive. I did a PWC and got the nitrites down to 4 and nitrates down to 10. Tested 24 hours later and nitrites are back up to 10 and nitrates are back up to 20. Ammonia is back to 0 so I added another shrimp.

I'm totally lost on what to do. Do I keep the shrimp in all the time? Will the nitrites eventually come down on their own. This makes me want to pack all this up and walk off. Very frustrating. I don't like the shrimp because it smells and you can't dose it accurately.

Don't do any PWCs while doing a fishless cycle. I think the shrimp is working out okay. What ppm of ammonia are you trying to maintain?

Yes, leave the shrimp until the numbers are 0 for ammonia and nitrite and there are some nitrates. Don't change out the shrimp or you have to wait for the new one to start rotting. You can add more dechlorinated water when needed but don't clean anything.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I did the PWC because I have read that a high level of nitrites & nitrates can cause the cycle to stall since the BB can be overwhelmed. I kept taking the shrimp out trying to keep ammonia levels down somewhat. I put a shrimp back in last night and I'll just let it stay in there and see what happens.

Where are you based? I'm asking this as I'm surprised you can't buy ammonia. You'd find this all a lot easier and quicker with a bottle of ammonia. I picked some up from a chemist (pharmacy) for a few quid.
