  1. Default 29 Gallon Advice

    0 Not allowed!
New here but posted a little while earlier about a 10 gallon tank I have and what to do with it. I knew I was overstocked and wanted to upgrade, and today I was able to land a good deal on a 29 gallon. The package was complete with a Tetra Whisper Ex30 filter as well as other supplies. I do think I need to find a real lid as it only came with a light, but not a complete top. Should I make one myself or purchase one?

My current fish are as follows:

    4 Buenos Aires Tetras
    3 Kuhli Loaches
    1 Dwarf Gourami
    1 Otto

I plan on adding more fish. Any suggestions? Looking for a shoal of smaller fish and anything else if possible. Should I step up filtration, as well?
I'm also thinking of keeping a 10 gallon up and running at school, with the possibility of adding those fish in the 10 to the 29 when I return home for the summer.

    I greatly appreciate any advice!

For the hood, you might want to take a look at http://www.marineland.com/products/a...ium-hoods.aspx They came in a good size for my ten gallon, and the light is good enough to grow low light plants like anubias and java fern, and some stem plants.
About the filtration, a good rule of thumb is to have at least twice the amount of filtration as your tank size, due to the fact that the filters suited for that tank size
is inadequate. In my 29 gallon, I have a aqueon 30 (rated for 30 gallons) and an aquaclear 50 (rated for 50 gallons).
As for adding to your stock (a wonderful idea! ), they will be happiest if their water chemistry suits their water found in their natural habitat. What is the pH of your water? This is helpful when choosing stock because while some fish are adaptable to a wide range of pH, others are not, which may factor into causes of death. Also take into consideration the temperament of the schoolers/shoalers. Some fish, like the black neon tetra, are calm and placid. others, like the glowlight tetra, like to play with their school and are a little more active. And others, like zebra danios, are almost never still. Good luck! Never be afraid to post with more questions.

+ 1 to Greentoads, you should definitely get a bigger filter for your tank.

I would increase your Buenos aires school to at least 6, even though the 29ga is still a little small for them, they get to at least 2.5".

Some very good information on keeping them here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...57752919,d.cGU

In my opinion, a 29g is not big enough for a proper sized group of buenos aires tetra. They get almost 3 inches long and are extremely active fish. I would consider getting rid of the ones you have and replacing them with a smaller tetra.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Yes, I understand that it's not ideal for BA's. I said in my old thread that I was sort of stuck with them, and that the 29 would at least be better than the 10. I also want my tank to be planted but having BA's eliminates pretty much all but java fern.

I've already commented on the BA tetra in another thread and I agree. They have no place in a 10 gallon or a 29 gallon. They are far too boisterous and active for that sized tank. I wouldn't really consider keeping them in anything smaller than a four or five footer. Rehome them and get something more suitable.

Having BA tetra also rules out keeping live plants (they will eat them all).

It used to make me so mad when my buenos aires ate all my plants!

I'll ask around at different LFS. I got them at petsmart, and I know that they won't accept them after a month or so. But you guys are right, they really aren't best suited for what I have. I was told at petsmart they were fine for a 10 gallon... after doing my research (too late) I realized that they weren't. So after I find a place for them... where should I go from there?

Edit: I just read that petco will take fish off your hands for free. I have one nearby, so I think I will take them there.

Once you get rid of the buenos aires you should increase the numbers of the kuhli loaches. A nice group of black phantom tetra would work in place of the buenos aires.
