  1. Default Pterophyllum Dumerilii

Just purchased these guys for my 120 g. I've never kept wild angels. My iPad camera doesn't do their colouration justice. So far they've accepted a few foods. So far so good.

Very nice! Wilds are my favorite, good luck with them.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Dummerilii... that's a name I haven't heard in ages. Seems to be invalid now. Yours look like nice wild caught Pterophyllum scalare.

Got them from a very reputable wholesaler. Their common name was listed as long nosed angelfish. I'm told these were wild caught in Venezuela.

Just curious as to why the term was deemed "invalid"? Semantics aside I'm thrilled to have these fascinating fish.

I think Talldutchie was just refering to the fact that they are now called Pterophyllum leopoldi.

Here's an illustration of the three species, just to check if you have the right one.

Yep! Names tend to change of the years and old names still persist in the trade.

Found this article on the subject http://www.finarama.com/timeline.htm
I also found these pictures of the three valid species http://www.finarama.com/identification.htm
Those red shouldered angels are stunning. I think the fish I bought would be considered scalare. Next time I see him I'll ask the store owner why he listed these fish with that name.

I'm going to hold back on the "I told you so!" and just saying thank you for that interesting link. I knew dumerilii was retired ages ago but not that it was already in the 1980s.
