Is it just me.... or does selling a young arapaima gigas sound like a bad idea

They have it listed for $180, and I'm just waiting for someone to think this thing is full grown and try to stick it in a 150g tank...

I just find it a bit irresponsible of a fish store to sell something like that, but that's just my little rant for the day

I would HOPE that anyone dropping $180 on a fish would do some research on what exactly they're getting. Who knows, though. I've seen just about any kind of freshwater monster you can imagine for sale online, including goonch catfish.

How big was the one in the store?
300 gallon mega tank: sailfin pleco, clown loaches, silver dollars, roseline sharks, congo tetras, new world cichlids
125 gallon office tank: Africian cichlids, synodontis catfih
75 gallon community tank: bolivian rams, black skirt tetras, dwarf neon rainbowfish, corys, harlequin rasboras, otos, bristlenose and bulldog plecos, assassin snails, various shrimp
60 gallon goldfish tank: fancy goldfish

I agree. Only a large public aquarium would ever be suitable for such a big fish. Too bad some idiot will probably end up buying it and sticking it in a small tank.

I just researched that fish - the ones remaining in the wild are usually found to be up to 6 1/2 feet in length full grown. Yes, it is irresponsible to put a fish like that for sale.

Don't get me started on that. Our biggest fish importer refuses to state for any species the adult size and they still import the insane fish like the red tailed. I've also seen Acanthicus adonis on sale as "algae eater, 30cm max"

In this case... perhaps it's a fish that they took in from someone? At least there's a hefty pricetag on it which should deter the worst of the mentally challenged fishkeepers.

True, like Brhino said, at $180 hopefully only an experienced keeper would consider it.

I know of a few monsterfish keepers in the area, but still most only have 1-2000 gallons of tank. I guess you could put it in that size tank till it grows up a bit and donate (or sell) to the Niagara Aquarium

Not sure how fast they grow, but I'd make sure if I did have the room, I had a home for it down the road

Agree with Hardy85...As per my reading/understanding about Arapaima gigas, i don't think these should be raised in a fish tank. They will out grow a fish tank (even a huge fish tank)..this fish grow to a disproportionatly large size..

Overall, an arapaima just isn’t practical in any home aquarium. I think one should be more pleased keeping an animal suited for their aquarium than one that would become excessively expensive and potentially damaging.

    Thanks

I expect it will take quite some time for it to grow out. Wouldn't surprise me if even the monster guys would be facing a problem after 3-4 years though.

My personal rule of thumb is at least 6x fish length in total tank length for the inactive species and 10 times for the more active species.
