They also carry one more small tetra that would work well with your tank, the Yellow phantom tetra, that stays at 1", just to give you another option.

Okay than one more to tempt you with, the Green neon. This is another small tetra that has become more popular in recent years and is perfiect for small tanks.

Oh, I like those a lot! But I don't think I could get the ph of water to work for them as its naturally kind of high.
    Also, I have a dilemma:
I got the aqueon water changer, but it seems a bit, erm, big for a 10 gallon tank. I'm afraid with fish that only grow up to an inch and such small space that they might take an unexpected trip into the sink :/
    And 2 parts to this:
Anyone have tips for cleaning sand?
And once again, the water changer seems big for cleaning the sand in a ten gallon.
Should I return in and just use buckets for water changes since its not a very big tank, and just get a gravel vacuum?

And one last thing I forgot: my mom is worried that a filter partly outside the tank is more likely to leak. That's not true, right? (As long as you set it up correctly)

Yes I would return the aqueon and get a gravel vacume because your only going to be changing 4ga weekly and that will be a snap, meaning one trip to dump and one trip to fill.

Assure your Mom that the HOB will not leak.

I have noticed a possible problem:
    0-3.jpeg
Will that overhang at the top of the aquarium to hold up the hood stop the aquaclear from fitting on? (the total length the AC will have to fit over is 1/2 inch)

I use a python (same thing as Aqueon water changer) because I have several tanks. But on my 10 gal I use a manual syphon and bucket for draining as I have guppies and always have guppy fry in this tank. They are easy to suck up. Better they go in a bucket than down the drain. Then I use the python to refill the 10 gal tank if I have it out anyway for the other tanks. But it's easy to refill a 10 gal just using the bucket.

You're going to want a dedicated fish bucket anyway. And just one trick you can try when refilling if you use the bucket - get a colander that fits over the tank. Something like this: http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-382...e-colander.jsp
It will sit across the tank while you pour the water in and disburses it more gently, without really disturbing the sand or plants, if you have them.

I can't really make out what you have in that picture, but if this is a standard 10 gal tank you should have no problem with the AquaClear filter fitting on the rim as long as there is a cutout in the hood.

    Well, I now have:
    The tank of course
    Decorations/hiding spots
    Plants
    Sand
    API Master Test Kit
    Aquaclear 30 filter
    ^^^ extra biomax
    Gravel/sand cleaner
Eheim jager 50 watt heater (being shipped)
    Thermometer

    I need:
A bucket for water changes and such
    Ammonia for the cycling
    A way to lower ph
