Default planing on a huge change

so recently my betta died from constipation and bladder issues.
i am tired of ALL my bettas dyeing one me so i gave them up. no lfs have healthy betta's so i figured its time for a change.
i then got really into apisto's but then none of my lfs had and so i went with platys. (in a 10 gallon
im gonna get 4 and have planned on having fry.
1 of the platys i snatched out of my 20 and is in my 10 so the bacteria won't die on me so i decided to leave it there.
then it leaves me with a fish missing in the 20 gallon.
my stock in the 20 gallon is 2 oto 14 neon tetra and a ram.
i was thinking of getting another ram, after i clean out ALL of the algae i have in the 20 which is a lot and find a new place i can keep it away from sunlight.
i have a couple questions on cleaning algae out. i am planning on using a razor blade to get the algae of the glass, and put the rocks and decorations in a 5-10% bleach solution and rinse them out. but how do i get algae off of plants? what if the razor blade doesn't work.? oh and the fish are going to be removed for this. (in a bucket) thanks
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

Constipation is not the fault of the lfs, but the person doing the feeding. If you really love betta's do a little research into their proper care and I bet you would have more success if you try again.

Did you ever put a background on that tank to keep the sunlight from hitting it? Until you deal with the cause, you can clean the algae all you want and it will just keep coming back.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

I would up the group of otos to at least 6, and hold off on the second ram. I don't know much about them, but if you did have two rams in a 20g you would need to very carefully plan the tank's layout to provide adequate territory for each of them. This would be less important with a m/f pair, but that can also be more complicated. Hopefully someone with experience keeping rams can chime in with more details.

It sounds like there's enough algae for the otos to eat, but they also need supplemental feeding and careful attention needs to be paid to ensure they do not starve. While they are wild caught and thus difficult to acclimate, many aquariasts loose the fish because of under feeding (if they don't look fat on their belly then they're under fed).

i don't think oto's are the solution since, even if they can clean all the algae then they have no more food.
oh, after i clean the tank i will be moving it into my closet where no sun-light will come close to it.
oh, trust me when i say the betta didn't die because of me.
i gave it a varied dry diet and once a week i would give it frozen brine shrimp.
i only gave him 3-4 pellets/ flakes. and when i did notice the constipation i fasted the fish and gave small amounts of peas every other day. and water quality was great (nitrates never over 5)
my other betta just stopped moving and doing betta things and died. (same water quality)
anyway how can i get the algae of my heater, plants and how can i keep my filter wet with ammonia to eat on too.
thank you guys for your input

To elaborate, oto cats do best when kept in groups, which I why I suggested more. Algae control is just a possible perk, but definitely not the reasoning behind the advice. Also my suggestion that otos die of underfeeding was specific to that fish, not your bettas. It sounds like you took great care of them, unfortunately they are often a short lived fish regardless, especially if they have already been exposed to unsanitary conditions before you get them.

There are a number of illustrated guides to algae. Each type of algae has a different cause and thus a different cure. Here are some that may help:
    http://www.aquaticscape.com/articles/algae.htm
    http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_...ater_algae.php
    http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm

I'd encourage you to stop thinking about stocking fish to deal with algae and instead focus more on manual removal and addressing the causes. It's important to note that most vegetarian fish are fairly "dirty" and could even exacerbate nutrient imbalances that cause algae. Regular maintenance is the most effective and reliable means of decreasing algae.

I apologize for asking - this tank has no fish in it now right?thank you guys for your input
