  1. Default How soon after new stock comes in do you wait?

So my LFS has a new order coming in tomorrow and I'm wondering if I can just go in and get something new or if I should wait a couple days to let the fish "settle in" before buy?

Bearing in mind I don't have a quarantine tank and won't until I find a place to fit my 55 gallon so I can relegate the 10 gallon to that status.

Using a 10gal tank to quarantine is an excellent idea - but you need to have cycled media to put in it first from an existing cycled filter - unless you know this already.

I would recommend watching the new fish for a few days to make sure that none of them look obviously sick - transfers are stressful to fish - sometimes you might see ich on them, or some will die right away - other times they all look very healthy.

There are some species that i absolutely will not buy until the store has had them for at least a week. Corys are one, and otos. These do not travel at all well, and it is not surprising that several will die during the first few days. As I told one of my local store owners, I would rather they died in your tank than mine.

Fish in the store, esp new arrivals, will obvsiously not be at their best in colouration, so that is not much of a test. But carefully observe how they swim, the fins, their eagerness to eat (in the store if food is being added, or when the tank is opened). If any fish in the tank appear diseased, do not buy any of the fish. I once saw a group of Black Ruby Barb, and I had been looking for them for months; there were 2 or 3 dead floating fish, and a couple others had red gills. I waited until the next week, and when I went back all were gone. The employee said they had all died during the week. Obviously they were carrying something.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

If you have a local fish store that has a good history of quality fish, you can actually pick up an order before they unbag them and take them home to your own QT tank. I did that often with The Wet Spot. Right now there is no one around here I really trust in this aspect though.

It also depends on how well they stand behind their fish. If you have a week return time frame like a lot of places that will make it right, it lessens the danger further.

All in all it depends how good your store is as to the true answer... I would go with Byrons answer if you are newer to the store or they dont have a good rep.

All very good responses . I wait a week and make sure there is no illness and they are eating. Before I make my finale purchase, I have the clerk feed the fish in the tank a small amount to insure they are eating.

Totally agree on Byron's, and other's advice, particularly regarding corys. Bought 6 orange lasers the day they came into my LFS and 4 went "belly up" that very evening in my QT tank.

Much, much, less expensive to medicate a 10g QT than a 55g!

As the others have said, I never buy new arrivals. There was once a small store which as Sandz said had a great rep. and would take back new arrivals but they are long gone.
Since you do not have a quarantine tank I would wait at least 4 days and see how the fish are behaving, looking for any signs of disease, amount of belly, and especially gill colour and dead fish in the tank.
Cardinal tetras are one of my favourite fresh water tetras and I've seen too many new arrivals get totally wiped out within 3 days of arriving.
Take your time there is no rush.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

I always wait at least 3-4 days and as others have said some fish travel better than others. I waited a week to get some boraras urophthalmoides since the LFS had lost quite a few upon delivery and shortly after. Even waiting the week, I lost 4 of the 6 I bought. But they replaced these for me and I added a couple more to get to 9. Haven't lost one since which is over 7-8 months now. So for this tiny fish, at least for this delivery, it was over 2 weeks before they were safe to buy.
