New Amazon fish species
During the past four years, more than 80 new species of fish have been discovered in the Amazon basin. As the linked article points out, many of these are endemic to one specific stream, meaning they occur no where else on earth as far as we know. This is a reliable statement, since over the past 3 or 4 decades, explorers have been accessing never-before areas in the Amazon and finding hundreds of endemic species.
Although this short article does not go into much detail, I would assume that these 80+ species are those that have been described by science as new species. There are undoubtedly dozens more awaiting description. Heiko Bleher said that during just one more recent collecting trip to a very remote Peruvian river, he found what he believes to be more than 20 new and unknown species of fish.
I recall Sir David Attenborough mentioning in one of his programs that the sad fact is that with so many still unknown species, many of these will become extinct before we even find them, and we may thus never know about them.
