Default A little help... Involving a betta and an ant...

Okay, its been a long time since I was here. My lovely betta has been just fine (aside from his fin-ripping habit) and hasn't given me problems in a few months. So, here is my dilemma...

This morning he tried to eat an ant, now it is stuck to his upper lip. I thought he'd be able to get it off by himself, but he is behaving as if he doesn't even notice it...

It's just sticking out in front of him, he's swimming and playing like normal... I'm worried about trying to remove it and it hurting him.

Any ideas? Or should I just let him be? It is in a bad spot that might prevent him from eating (the ant pushing his food away when he tries to grab it).

He ate last night, so there is a little time. But the sooner the answer the better!

P.S. I can't get a good picture, my betta is black with blue fins, so the ant doesn't show up. Sorry about that.

Um... I think he just noticed it. He tried to suck it into his mouth or something...

The ant need air to survive, the Betta has probably had that ant underwater for some time so I'm thinking the ant is dead. Your Betta will be fine with a part of an ant hanging from his jaw.

Okay. Thank you. He never actually caught an ant before, so it kind of freaked me out that his first one bit him instead.

I think I can sleep a little better tonight, thanks!

I assume that decomposition and softening underwater will eventually cause that ant to lose its death grip on your betta's jaw.
if the fish seems fine I wouldn't worry.

Make sure to keep the water extra clean so the bite doesn't get infected.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

Thanks everyone, for the help! It seems that my betta realized that it was supper time, so somehow dislodges the ant himself. Whenever he hears that little alarm he knows its time to eat. He ate just fine, so I'm guessing that the bite doesn't hurt him too badly, but I'm definitely cleaning the tank more often for a while. (Since I can't see certain infections cuz he's black...)

I'm glad he's doing ok. As Mommy1 said, keep the water clean and keep an eye on him.

I also like to fish and I know fish have been eating all kinds of insects forever.
It's just a natural reaction for a fish to try and eat what it can reach. Now the Archer fish has made that a speciality.
I'm glad all has turned out well for your Betta fjolliff.

Glad hes back to his normal self. And glad to hear from you again. But in all reality i think ants can survive underwater for a few days so hoping it will might make for a long wait lol.
