With my fry, I grow almost all of them out. Most of the fry, once they get to a decent size, I will put in our monthly fish club auctions. Then use any money from that to buy other fish stuff. Also trade them with other folks in the fish club, our club has an active forum where people are always selling or willing to trade fish. If there is a lot of fry and I get them to a decent size, there are a few stores here that will give store credit for them. Stores often won't offer much for the fish, depends on what type it is, usually they offer prices they get fish from their wholesaler at.

I know someone who runs a non-chain LFS near here who says that if I ever get my checkerboard chiclids to breed, he'll buy them all once they're big enough to sell.
I had some zebra danio fry once that I couldn't care for, so I gave them to a non-chain store that put them in their plant sale tank where they put all the livebearer fry that are born in-store. The fry are given a bit of food now and then and any that grow large enough are sold. You can find some interesting little platies and the like in that tank.
I hate hearing people say "it's only a $3/$5/$1 fish/shrimp, so it's ok if it dies, I can just get another." It's still an animal! All animals should be treated like they're worth $10,000.
