Thread: Dragonfish???

Hybrid View

  1. Question Dragonfish???

    0 Not allowed!
I was at a LFS the other day and came across this fish. There were a few of these in a tank along with a few arowanas, and the lady at the store identified them as "dragonfish." That's not what comes out when you search for dragonfish on google or wikipedia though. Anyone know what the scientific name of this species is?

That is a bichir, not exactly sure what species though.
They are on occasion called dragonfish due to their primitive look, but the name is more commonly reserved for arowana or violet gobies.

Identifying bichir is not easy even with a good picture. Based on the pattern and the number of dorsal finlets I'd guess it to be Polypterus delhezi. In any case you're looking at at least a foot long predator.

That's most likely a delhezi as Talldutchie suggested, but could also be an endlicheri

Also, I have never heard bichirs being called dragonfish before. That's a pretty crappy petshop if they can mix up a bichir with a dragon goby

I've heard these called 'dinosaur fish', but never dragon fish. a good pet store should always be able to give you a scientific name.

They called bichirs "dragon gobies" on tanked?

I knew that show was pretty loose on fish and aquarium knowledge, but...wow.
