Do you have an Ace hardware nearby? I got some ammonia from them a couple years ago.

Unfortunately no, our local Ace store closed up shop nearly a year and a half ago

We have 2 other hardware stores in town, a local shop and a Lowes. All they carried was the lemon scented junk. Walmart had that and the stuff mixed with suffocant (sp?) as well as the lemon junk. The LFS does have things like ammonia wafers and bacteria starter - tetra safe start I think it was. Not sure how those options work vs straight ammonia. That or get some water plants, which they sell in submersible pots and place a few of them in there. I have to go back tomorrow anyways and exchange my defective heater.

I also noticed some gurgling noises out of my filter on occasion but I think I solved that. I accidentally had it set to low instead of full speed. So in the mean time I will keep the filter running to keep the water from getting stale.

I have never seen or heard of this before, but found it through google. Maybe it would suit your needs. A janitorial bottle is way more than you'd ever use anyway. http://goo.gl/OIuQZQ

I've never seen any evidence of the bacteria starters working. I've heard many stories of harm coming from the approach of replacing the cycle with a bacterial starter and adding fish immediately, but no harm from simply adding bacteria starter to a fishless cycle. It definitely isn't necessary, but there's no harm in trying it (as long as you're using it to augment an appropriate cycle rather than replace one).

Usually filter gurgling is caused by air in the impeller. You might try going through the priming of the filter on full power and then turning it down.

edit: I also came across this http://goo.gl/33TAMy and this on amazon.

I think I solved the filter issue. I had the dial turned to an odd position like half way between the low and high. once I put it on an actual setting the noise seems to have stopped.

But yea I would use the Tetra Safe Start to start the cycle and let it build up. I wouldn't be adding fishies right away. I seen the first item you linked on amazon. But you can only add it to an order of $25 or more, you can't buy it out right. But I may look at that 2nd option. Plus they have the water test kits for like half the price as my LFS anyways.

On the heater issue...I need to go back and read, but you DO have a thermometer in there, correct?....aquarium heaters do not stay on all the time, they kick on only when the temp drops below what you set it at...they run in intervals...if the heater is maintaining temp, it is not defective

It wasn't maintaining the temp is the issue. I tried to turn it up by 8 degrees (it was already set 3 above what it was recorded at) and even then it only turned on for a couple minutes. even then the water temp had been decreasing throughout the day even with it set to a higher temp.

So I got the heater exchanged. They didn't have the one I originally got so I got the only other brand they had- a Marineland Visi-Therm Submersible 150w. It did stay on overnight and switching on and off from time to time, so I hope this one works out.

I am a bit concerned though since I have it set to 75 and my thermometer is reading around 79/80. I will keep an eye on it, if it can maintain that temp I will see if I can verify it with a second thermometer and adjust accordingly. Also picked me up an API freshwater kit over the weekend.

Depending on how accurately your heater is calibrated, it and the thermometer can read different temps. Use the 2nd thermometer to verify and adjust the heater until you get the temp you want.

Yea I bought a 2nd thermometer. The original is an analog liquid crystal strip on the outside glass - it is reading between 76-78 with the heater set to 72. The new heater is reading 78.3 currently placed relatively close to the other thermometer. It is a digital censor with the display tethered and suctioned to the outside of the tank. That one I verified it's accuracy by turning it on in the open air in my hallway and it measured closely to my thermostat on my wall for the current indoor temp.

I will let it sit over night to see if it remains stable and maybe adjust it down a couple degrees. I assume the proper placement is as follows - Put the heater near where the water is re-entering the tank from filter and then the thermometer near the opposite side at the front of the tank. I currently have it running vertical (parallel to the inflow tube), Should it run horizontal so that it covers as much of the inflow water as possible?

Placement is correct. Check the instruction manual and if it can be placed horizontal, that is best.
