  1. Default 30 gal angel tank redo

    0 Not allowed!
I've had my 30 gallon tall set up for close to 2 years now. The current (and long time) inhabitants are 1 marble blue pearlscape angel, 6 zebra danios, 13 Harleys, 8 cory cats, 1 albino bristle nose pleco, a brown rabbit snail, 2 nerites snails and several blue apple snail babies.

From the beginning the tank was scaped pretty much like this:
artificial plants, driftwood (with live java fern) and an almost 3 inch layer of aquarium gravel.
    1-5 gal 035.JPG

Yesterday, I redid the tank. I removed all but 3/4 of an inch of the gravel (which was rich with BB I'm hoping), added a layer of pool filter sand, and topped it off with a layer of fluorite. Then I planted 4 Vals at the back, 1 nice sized java fern, and 5 rosy leaf crept plants. I will be adding some floating hornwort for the angel. I also added a larger piece of Malaysian driftwood (all the wood is Malaysian). All the inhabitants remain the same
    Now it looks like this:
    1-30 redo 031.JPG

I'm please with the makeover and eager for the plants to fill out but I'm not all together certain the scape is the best it could be so any suggestions are welcome. You need to know, however, that this tank is seen from all 4 sides so I have to be aware of how it looks from all angles. Also - the water was still a bit cloudy when I snapped this shot last night. It's crystal clear now.

    Thanks in advance

Looks good and it will look great when it fills in. The only thing that bothers me is the top of the driftwood on left. My eyes keeps going to that spot. Maybe you can attach a plant or moss to hide the flat surface of the wood. Im not sure what I would attach, prob some java fern or java moss idk. From my experience none of my aquascapes ever came out looking how i plan. Its always "move this around" or "maybe I should wait till in grows in more." Heck my favorite tank is the one I just threw in all my spare plants into lol. Please keep us posted on the evolution of this tank I guarantee it will look great with time. Beautiful angel btw.

Thanks Gogi. that wood has been bothering me too. I think I might try to flip it around and see how the other side looks. If that doesn't do it, I love your idea of attaching a plant to it.

Just hoping the vals don't melt down to nothing. :o)

I already had to take the rabbit snail out and give him a new home in my 90. He was burrowing in my carefully layered substrate LOL. Now I know where the little devil went all the time on those occasions I couldn't find him.
Have had a lot of diggers lately - including my betta who rearranged the flourite in his tank. Geez. :o)

Oh, and thanks on the angel. I love her. Almost lost her last may (some type of protozoan infestation in her gut) but Indian Woods Angel advised me how to treat her and she came out of it. She didn't eat for 6 weeks then finally came around - so I'm really thrilled that she's so robust and healthy now.

Cindy, I had no idea you had this tank! I have to say that angel is just lovely... she is the first thing I noticed, the second thing is what Goji mentioned.. the top of the wood, maybe some petite anubias or java fern or like you said, flip it over. Really challenging to scape a tank to be viewed from all sides but you're doing a great job!

    Thanks, Judi.
Yes - this was actually my first tank. The AC got me through the cycle with 3 platies and 3 dwarf gouramis. Yes - I was the classic nob and found the AC AFTER I'd set up the uncycled tank. Still have one of the gouramis but I rehomed the platies.

Def going to do something about that driftwood. thanks again

Thanks Steeler. And yes - I'm so glad I was able to save her. She's just beautiful and so nice and plump and healthy now. It was so painful watching her those 6 weeks when she wouldn't eat no matter what I tried. Now she rushes to the glass when she sees me and gobbles up everything I feed her.

Lovely mommie! That angels is just gorgeous, I so wish we could get blue angels in NZ. :(

I have to agree with above posted, perhaps flip the wood the other way around? Might have to put some rocks around the base and really jam it into the substrate to get it to sit tho.

Thanks Amelia. I've already flipped the driftwood around and it looks much better.
May have to get some more vals to help fill in as these are already melting. I expected that. There is some nice healthy growth at the base of the stalks but know it will take a while for it to regrow.
