    I have a little top fin heater rated for a 5g in my betta tank and it haa developed this weird film. I tried to get a picture of it. Any ideas?

    Could be a load things, algae, bio film, fungus.. never paid mine too much thought.

    Looks to be standard bio-film (not algae); most likely the same bacteria that consumes fish waste (i.e. filter bacteria or the good bacteria.) It can be wiped off but will regrow - best to ignore it. It does help the tank but is trivial in processing power compared to the filter.
