What kind of filter for a black moor?
0
I plan on getting a black moor goldfish in December, so I've been doing a lot of research for the past few days to make sure I'll care for it correctly. I plan on keeping him/her in a 10 gallon, and I'm going to attempt growing some live plants. But while researching, I read that they don't like currents, so what type of filter should I get? And if anyone knows one that is sold at walmart, petco, etc. that'd be even better.

no offense, but you'll need to find more reputable sources if you have been misled into thinking that a goldfish fits into 10 gallons. some types of goldfish can reach a foot and easily more, black moors luckily stay smaller but I've personally seen ones larger than grapefruit. 30 gallons(some would say 40) is the bottom line for keeping fancy goldfish. kept in smaller tanks, fish tend to stunt which is an abnormal and unhealthy reduction of growth.
fancy goldfish don't cope well with strong currents, but a bit of flow is fine. you could put a large decoration in front of the filter outflow to disperse the current a bit.
filters should always be rated for at least 2X tank volume, especially with messy, heavy bodied fish like goldfish. I would recommend an aquaclear 70 HOB filter. fairly cheap
for its capacity, durable and reliable, and easy to maintain. I doubt you'll find it at walmart, I don't know about petco but most proper aquarium stores should carry them.

You need to research the moor before you start planning. They can grow up to 10 inches so they require much much more then a 10 gallon. I'm not sure a proper tank size but I would guess a 55 gallon at the minimum others well be able to give you a better idea. As for the filter since gold fish produce lots of waste it should be at a minimum double the tank size but the more the better. I would recommend a canister filter rated for 75 gallons at least. Some good choices are rena xp2 or 3 and fluval is a good brand. Others will be able to help you more for deciding on a filter.
20 gallon tall: empty
29 gallon: moderately planted with 9 bloodfin tetra, 1 german blue ram, 11 glow light tetra and 1 BNP
10 gallon QT: empty

Definatly.needs a bigger tank, a 40g breeder would be perfect for a moor. Also i would go with ac filters as stated above. Amazon useualy has decent prices on them. Or a small canister filter. With plants i would look into coldwater plants, im not sure but possibly plants like dwarf sag and hornwort would work but youd have to look into that.

It's just going to be temporary until the fish gets larger, I have been doing a lot of research, I know goldfish get big, but I am going to get one that is not even one inch long, so it will be good for a while. But I will upgrade sizes once need be.

I think the point is that keeping the fish in a 10 gal tank for any significant period of time will stunt its growth and shorten its life. That's why the small tank now and upgrade when it looks like it needs a larger tank can be a mistake.

Sorry - I think that's a poor decision - sometimes people have plans to get that bigger tank and it never happens - best bet is to get the larger tank to start off with so you don't need to worry about transferring it.
If you don't have the money or space to start off with a larger tank, I would personally skip the purchase until you do - all fish start off small BTW - some grow very quickly too.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand how a fish that is (maybe) an inch long can't be in a ten gallon until it grows. I would like to hear the reasoning why it's "unhealthy." It's bot as if it's a five or ten inch long fish in a puny ten gallon.
