Default Can I mix African and American cichlids?

I've done some research on this, and most people say it's a bad idea. Others have had success with it. What do you all think? We have a pair of Taiwan reefs right now and want to get them some more tankmates.

generally speaking i would say no for a few reasons:
1.) water conditions. most american cichlids like a softer water where as africans tend to harder
2.) temperment. even tho american cichlids can have tempers, it dosent quite compare to the attitudes of the africans
3.) diets. american cichlids in general enjoy their full omnivore diet, and can handle extra protien often found in treat style foods. on the other hand if most afticans get to much protein they can come down with a bad case of bloat.
4.) habitat. they come from 2 completely different systles of aquascape.

those are the reasons i can think of off the top of my head. but all fish are different and im lumping them all into just 2 cats of the fish so there might be exceptions but i think those are all solid reasons.

I would never recommend this. The only cichlid I would mix with Mbuna are other Mbuna. If its Peacocks and Haps I would mix them in some cases. If its Tangs I would be careful on which goes with which... And thats just africans. Kribs sometimes work with other africans but they ARE africans lol even though they are considered dwarf cichlids.

I concur, this is not a good idea and almost certain to cause trouble.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

Jewel Cichlids do fine with New World Cichlids. They are from African rivers, not lakes, pretty much the African version of a Convict.
