Planted 5.5 gallon ideas
I found a good deal on a 5.5 gallon tank on kijiji (yay for used tanks!) and I want to make it a tiny planted tank, eventually add some cherry shrimps and maybe a snail (can we have snails in planted tank or will they eat all the plants?)
Once everything is nice and pretty I'll add a betta.
Now, I have absolutely zero experiences in aquarium plants and there is so many to choose from, both in petstores and online. I don't know where to start, what kind of substrate should I use (some say sand, other say use dirt, but i'm kinda worried it will cloud the water if I use the later)
Also, once I have everything running, how can I make sure there's no hitchhikers in my plants? can I use a light solution of water/javel? I don't mind one or two nice looking snails (horned netrite are sweet, and I read they don't bread easily, which is nice for me!)
Any ideas where I can start?

You "de-snail" plants by soaking them in alum and water - though I'm sure others have used other methods - it was recommended to me to use algaecide at triple/quadruple its strength because I couldn't find alum.
There are many easy plants that don't require special lighting or special nutrients - java fern/moss come to mind and anacharis.
Can't recommend substrate - there are types that are made for planted tanks but many members have had good luck with various types of substrate - I personally use plain gravel and my plants do fine.
