    Default Bright Blue/Purple freshwater fish?

    0 Not allowed!
I have a community 45 gallon freshwater tank, that I am looking to add a splash of color to. All of the fish in there are red/orange or greyish. I would love to add something that has a bright blue or purple coloring. Being a pretty mild community tank, I know that most cichlids are out. I also cant do a blue gouramie because, I have a gold gouramie in there that gets territorial with other gouramies. Any suggestions?

"Bright" blue is not easy to find. The iridescent blue line on the Paracheirodon tetra species come to mind (neon, cardinal, etc). The Blue Kerri Tetra, Inpaichthys kerri, has a nice slightly-metallic sheen on the male; the common name of Blue Emperor is a bit misleading, as this fish is not related to the two Emperor tetras. Some platy have blue colouration.

BTW, the blue and gold gourami are in fact the same species, Trichopodus trichopterus, and you are quite correct not to mix them unless in very large quarters. There are several colour variants (with varying common names) in this species.

These fellows can get a bit nippy, at least mine were, I had to remove them. And gourami was mentioned as being in this tank, so this might not be a good match.

As another member said, we shoudl know all fish in the tank, and tank size, to suggest suitable. Don't know water parameters either.

The regular Emperor tetra, Nematobrycon palmeri, that I believe Sheamurai is talking about will give you that purple/blue color your looking for and make great tankmates.

Most cichlids are out but you can go with a good number of apistogramma species, a single kirbensis, german, bolivian or electric blue rams (as mentioned earlier).

Purple pencil fish, you can look into killifish... there are a lot of options out there.
