But, since you asked, if I were setting up a 20g planted tank with the named species, I would have 7-8 marble hatchets, 7 black phantom (4 male, 3 female), 5-6 corys, 8-9 neons.

    Byron.
I can try it but i think will stay with 6 marble,6corys,6 BP tetras, but up the neons to 10 but after some time(like 6 months or so )i will add some more does that sound good

+1 to post #17. Byron is right on.
Different species use different levels of the tank so they are really not competing for space as they are layered. Hatchets on the surface, BP upper middle layer, neons lower middle of tank and Cory's at the bottom except when they dart to the surface.
Now filtration and tank maintenance play a big roll here. Weekly maintenance is a must and extra filtration will make things easier for you. More fish = more waste and although live plants will help, extra filtration (or two filters like a HOB with an additional canister filter) will be an asset. Sounds like a tank we need to see some pictures of when your done Mikemike.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

I do not recommend adding "part" of the group with shoaling fish like tetra. If you can get them, acquire them together. Adding more later does not always work.

I will admit that with neons it is less of an issue than with some fish. But within a group of shoaling fish there may be interactions, including an heirarchy, among the fish. This group of fish is confined to a small space, which is obviously very un-natural. The space becomes their territory. Sometimes, they resent intruders.

The other thing about adding all of a species together, is that they will be less stressed and more likely to settle in quicker, the more there are.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

I think your making the right choice, at the end of the day you still only have 20g to work with.
