Default Are Buenos Aires Tetras Known For Eating Fry?

    0 Not allowed!
I have a 75 gallon community tank which consists of (3) yoyo loaches, (2) dojo loaches, (1) sailfin pleco, (14) Buenos aires tetras, and (200+) firemouth cichlids. Ok.. so the firemouths are actually a mom, dad, and a large batch of fry. I’d like to have some of the fry survive, but don’t have the room for another tank setup at the moment. Looking at the list of other fish my tank, I’m curious if the tetras are a threat to the fry. Are they known for going after fry? I’m sure they would if given the chance, but do they have a reputation for it? Same question on the loaches. I don’t think the dojos would, but how about the yoyos? The fry are just now starting to swim, but haven't left their cave yet. Mom and dad do a great job at protecting their territory.

The yoyo might since they can take fry at night when the parent's don't suspect it.

The average tetra will go after anything that is small and moves. If you got a decent amount of plant cover I'm sure some will survive.
Now, have you considered what to do with the fish that do survive?

Yup! I’m hoping to keep one or two for myself. I have a 46g at work (also a community) with gravel substrate so I’ll need to find time to change that one over to sand. A couple of coworkers are interested in taking a couple. I’ve also found 3 local stores who will take some when they’re big enough. I still have more stores to call so I may find more too. 

I've kept a school of Buenos Aires tetra (in a six foot tank) and they are lightning fast and voracious eaters. I'd say they could pick off fry easily if they wanted to - just due to their speed!

Having owned Buenos Aires tetras before, I would say yes, I would expect for them to eat fry.Tetras are the type of fish that don't care for their young, and if not well fed or being in a school of a small number (14 should be fine though), would certainly pick them off.

I would worry about everything in your tank, except the pleco, trying to eat the fry. Can you divide the tank into fry and fish with a screen of some sort to protect the young?

The plants should also provide decent cover for some to live, as was mentioned.

Allmost all fish will eat fry of other species if they get a chance. This includes all tetras. Even herbivores might eat the occasional fry.
Do as I say. Not as I do.
