  1. Default Inherited a tank from a friend. What kind of Cichlid is this?

Can anyone tell me what this is? At first I was thinking Green Terror but it doesn't seem to have the definitive markings I'm seeing online and the shape looks slightly different. I'm having trouble identifying it.

    Thanks!

Looks like a jack dempsey cichlid to me, here is a bit on their care. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species...-octofasciata/
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Right on, thanks! I don't know why I didn't think of a Jack Dempsey =\ Here's another thing, my buddy gave me the tank with two of these guys and a good size pleco. It's only a 45 gallon tank. I'm using an aquatop cf 300 canister filter and the filter he had, a marineland emporer 280 power filter. He also had a HUGE oscar in there that had hole in the head. I had to euthanize the oscar (sad) but I'm curious if the oscar's hole in the head is due to anything that could continue to plague the rest of the tank?

It is thought that hole in the head is caused by poor water quality and food. Most cichlids are prone to get hole in the head and your fish are susceptible if they are in poor water quality. Keeping an oscar, two jd's, and a large pleco crammed into a 45g tank is appalling at best and I would assume poor water quality to be the cause of the HITH, but that is just a guess. The best filtration in the world does not make up for cramped conditions, Is there any hope you are going to get a bigger tank for the remaining three fish? Depending on what species of pleco you have I would suggest at least a 75g for 2 JD's and a good sized pleco.

I plan on re-homing the fish eventually. The JD's aren't looking so hot so I'm hoping I can revive them a little then find a good home for them. The next large tank I'm getting is going to my goldfish :)

From there, the 45 gallon will be dedicated to a firemouth that is currently in a 10 gallon tank and desperately needs more room (he's about 6 months old)

That is good to hear. Clean water will help them immensely.

Despite the rough conditions, he still looks like a pretty nice JD. It astounds me how people can overstock tanks that badly -- even if they haven't done any research, they must be able to SEE that the fish are cramped.
