Reading back over my post, I seem to have got the idea you were considering Black Skirt Tetra, which would not be good. Black Phantom are OK, a group of 7-8 would be fine. And the neons of course. And you could have a group of corys for the substrate interest, minimum five. Is this what you were thinking?

As for the gourami, if you already have it, then let's hope for the best; but if not, I wold not recommend one.

Black phantoms as Byron pointed out would do fine in your tank (along with the neons), they are a very outgoing species without being aggresive like their Serpae cousins.

That would be better. The Bolivian is a nice fish to have on its own, by which I mean just the one Bolivian and not a pair or more of them, plus the several shoaling fish.

When selecting the Black Phantom, get a mix of male/female. If you get 8 (which I recommend) 4 male and 4 female, or 5 male and 3 female. Males are dark gray with black fins and a black shoulder patch, with an extended dorsal fin that can be unfurled like a banner above the fish. When displaying, the gray colouration darkens almost to black. Females are lighter, usually with a slightly reddish background colour, with a smaller dorsal and with vivid red adipose, pectoral and ventral fins. The males will display to each other, sort of a "challenge" but other than sometimes a split in the dorsal fin, no harm is done, and this is natural and not problematic. No less than 3 females will keep the males occupied too.

I you can find Red phantom, get them, awesome fish, they do like their water a lttle cooler than some Characins though.

Agree. And that led me to think about temperature for what has been suggested in this thread. The neons are fine cooler, and Red Phantoms, and most corys as well. The Bolivian is going to be a bit unappreciative though.

BTW, steeler, I see Matt has the temp range for the Red Phantom up to 28C/82F...I gave 23C/73F as upper limit in my profile so I must have found that as the majority view. Will have to check this out with him too I guess. B.

I like your answer better, it goes had in hand with everything I've read over the years, BTW I keep mine at 76F.
