Most shelters prefers to adopt dogs and other animals to homes in their local area. Does anyone have any experince in trying to adopt a dog from further away.

Up here in Canada, a lot of local shelters have starting working with shelters in other cities to help get as many animals adopted as possible. If you want a animal from a shelter in another city, they can have the animal brought to your local shelter for you to adopt.

Not too sure if that would be a option for you
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Where I live, various organizations that foster dogs/cats will bring the animals to local Petco's/Petsmarts to show the public...you can interact with the animals, walk them around the store, etc...that's where we got our Ginny, she came from a town 1 1/2 hours drive from our home...you get to have a 2 week probationary period , once you are approved for adoption, to take the animal home and see if they will be a good pet for your circumstance...these are foster, no kill programs that are seperate from animals shelters or the Humane Society

My situation is a little bit different. I would like to adopt from outside the country. It is only an hour by plane and legal easy but I am unsure how to go about finding and contacting a shelter.

I am looking for a male Grand Dane. I could allways buy one and import it but with so many looking for new homes i would prefer to adopt.

I have found that many US shelters and rescues are very protective/possessive of their animals. I tried for quite a while prior to adopting our older dogs locally...and then again 4 years later when we got the 2nd larger dog (which was 4 years ago again),

Several places said 'no'. Finally one said yes...but they wanted the entire family...with existing pets...to drive down for a meet and greet to see if we'd all get along.... I was willing to go myself...and maybe take hubby...but I wasn't loading up 3 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats to cross the border - a 10-12 hour road trip - one way. So they refused us...saying we weren't willing to comply with their regulations.

I had similar issues in Canada too...but with birds...

But locally? I had no problems adopting either Celeste or Job...in fact it was surprisingly easy.

Hopefully you luck out though! Maybe you'll find a shelter more willing to work with you.

I have seen a lot of breed specific shelters when it comes to Great Danes. But I am not sure if they are easier or harder to work with.

Expexting you to bring your pets seems like an extreme condition, and an unresponsible thing to do as a pet owner. I would be more likley to turn someone down who actually did it. but thats just me and my 2c

When I was looking for a puppy to adopt, the shelters in my area gave me the information needed to contact the shelters of other cities. Maybe the shelters in your area would be able to help you with contact information for neighboring countries.

When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I said more or less none. there are a couple small and mostly poorly managed alternatives (might not allways be true but has been in the cases i have seen. They give hope for the future but is not much now.

http://www.granadaanimaloutreach.org/available-dogs.php Is a good concept but very small.

http://www.bringfido.com/resource/an...try/nicaragua/ - Only a directory page with no results.

http://animal.rescueme.org/ni Doesnt really feature anything either. empty pages to siphon traffic from search engines.

http://www.pbase.com/danpolley/rescue They havent really been avtive as of late. Last twitter early 2011, last blog 2012 etc. They were (are?) more dedicated to spaying than rehoming. I have been in contact with thema couple of years ago unfortunately they let their strays breed.

The web give you an idea that there is a lot more down here than it actually is once down here. Many projects are started, But many project die very early as well. The websites linger on.
