Many people in the UK use natural sea water in their reef tanks. I would use it too if the nearest ocean was not a 26 hour drive from me.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

A fellow at me local reef club has a pico tank...but he custom built his so it has a wee sump as well...5 gals tho...and he has a fish in his...the build is quite interesting, even for a non-DIY'er. Alink to the build, and to how it looks now.

You just have to be a little careful with the water parameters and make sure the salinity and alkalinity levels are at least close to that commonly found among the coral reefs. Based on everything that I have read, those level are not constant outside of the coral reefs. However, you can easily use some supplements and a little salt to adjust the levels.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I've always been curious about what would show up spontaneously from live rock in a system like this.
