Default Ideas for aquascaping a 10 gallon tank for two year old's birthday

    0 Not allowed!
So my best friend and his wife want me to help set up a tank for their 2 year old son. I have a 10 gallon that I am willing to donate as well as filter, lights, gravel, etc. She wants it to be colorful and with American/Baseball theme. They have two cats and a kid and don't want a lot of maintenance. Here are my thoughts, please comment!

Fish - Tank is probably to small to go african cichlid so I am thinking small school of tetras with one or a few small oddball/unique fish. To keep in American theme, could do neons for the red and blue! Also since she is from Chicago (cubs) and he is from Philly (Go Phils! Ugh....), the red and blue patterns would be cool. Could have a gourami, platy, swordtail, any low maintenance hardy fish that doesn't grow too large.

Decor - I will convince them to have SOME live plants. If we are going fake, then it won't be plants but will be some decoration made of glass or something fish safe. I'm looking for cool coin banks made of glass that have American or baseball theme. Any ideas?

Substrate - I have some red, white, and blue gravel that would be great! It may be too distracting so I may end up going something neutral and easy to see.

    Thanks all!

Sounds like a fun project for a little guy.

Check ebay for vintage and or decorative aquarium decor. you could get lucky

as for fish, the 10 gal really limits you. A small school of neons or cardinals (6) would pretty much be it if you want a showpiece fish. If so, I'd go for a dw gourami and that would fill the tank.
You could also go for a single betta.

How soon is the birthday? Are you going to have time to cycle the tank or will you be using some of your seeded filter media?

    Have fun!

Birthday is in 2 weeks but I'm going to use seeded filter from my tank.

If not a school of tetras...then what? I was thinking betta too

what about 2 or 3 male guppies? those fancy tails are gorgeous and they'd be a perfect size for a ten. if you get males and females there will be babies galore to deal with:o( so all males might be the answer.

Maybe glo-fish? It's my understanding that they are genetically engineered zebra danios, not dyed fish. Here's badman's profile. he says 15 gal tank and he's usually spot on. I've read others that say 10 gal works. so ... that's a little iffy.

Of course, the betta is out if you go with any of the above.

I have a crown tail betta that's 2 shades of blue and also has red. One of those in a BB themed tank would be gorgous. you could add an couple apple snail and it would be a fun and interesting tank.

Danios need bigger than a 10 gallon in my experience. They are active fish that need a long tank to swim in.

I'd go for a betta and a school of pygmy cories. The betta will be full of character and will be fairly interactive at the glass front. The cories will be cute and add something to the bottom. I'd use sand instead of gravel for these though.

Female Betta with 10-12 Green neon's or Ember tetras or Gold phantom tetras. All three tetras I mentioned stay 1" or less.

    Just some idea's.

But I do like the Pigmy cory's idea also.

I honestly don't think aquascaping is a good idea, especially if the people who's tank your going to set up aren't experienced with planted tanks. If you put a few live plants in it that are simple, it should be fine. But I don't really know if you mean a real, natural looking aquascape, or just a few plants in the tank.
I myself have set up a tank for a teacher, and I only put a few simple live plants, and the rest were decorations.
