  1. Default Failed Collection Trip

I went out to collect some fish this sunday. I was hoping to find some Thorichthys Helleri, Amphilophus alfari, Parachromis friedrichsthalii, Rhamdia nicaraguensis, Eleotris picta, ( I have one, want another) and Synbranchus marmoratus. Mostly I wanted to find the first two species on the list Thorichthys Helleri and Amphilophus alfari. Both quite common in some rivers here. I knew that the time migh tnot be the best to go collecting since it had rained heavily earlier this week. Dry season force denser concentration of fish.

The result of the day. A complete failiure. All I was able to catch all day (using a fine meshed throwing net) was:

    • 2 short fined molly (Poecilia mexicana) that I brought home and that is adapting well.

Photo from the internet. My does not cooperate ;-)

    • And this large freshwater shrimp

The shrimp is creating a home in one of my bigger tanks but i am considering moving him to a pond

I will go out again in a couple of weeks and will hopefully experience better luck then. I will make sure to post the result here.

That molly is stunning. I'm surprised I haven't seen this colour variant before in the pet trade.

Poecilia mexicana is very rare in the trade. It is pretty and have a lot of personality for a molly but as you know there isnt much of a market for the natural type livebearers.

That's a shame as they are really beautiful

They are and this is a fine specimen. I think rare aquatics in your country sometimes gets a few firefly.

@william: Do you also register temp, ph and conductivity when you collect?

I usually register register temp, ph. I also register the exact location of each catch. I need to get a conductivity meter.

The shrimp reminds me of a macrobrachium species. They taste so good.

They are harvested a lot for food and I think it indeed is a macrobrachium sp. They taste a little muddy here (compared to SW shrimp) due to the environments they are found in. They are better if they are kept in clean water for a few days before they get cooked.

Definitely a beautiful molly. Congrats on the catch. Sorry you didn't catch the rest on your list!

The shrimp is very interesting, too. How big a tank are you keeping it in currently?
