  1. Default What are my chocolate gouramis telling me?

I have a trio of chocolate gouramis, one female and two males I believe. Unfortunately I had no idea how difficult these fish were to keep when I purchased them, otherwise I may have second guessed the purchase. Over the last few weeks their colors have been fading, but otherwise they seem completely normal. Still eating, engaging in breeding behaviours, swimming normally, etc. Two of the gouramis are very faded (first image), while the other is just starting to fade (second image, noticeable behind pectoral fin). Is this just an odd coloration, or is there something else going on?

The tank is a 125 gallon tank with a dirt substrate (miracle grow organic choice soil, capped with aquarium sand), kept at 78*f. At the time of this post, pH is 7.4, and ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite are at 0ppm. I do weekly ~40% water changes, dose with Flourish Excel (10mL daily, 50mL after major water change) and Aquavitro Envy (10mL every three days). Tankmates are other assorted dwarf gouramis, dwarf rainbowfish, dwarf rasboras, dwarf cories, anchor cats, badids, and two bristlenose ancistrus. The other fish in the tank seem unaffected.

I'm beginning to believe that my pH is too high, and that I'm seeing evidence of the skin conditions that these fish seem to be susceptible to. I'm reading opposing viewpoints on the topic of pH though, with many websites saying they require a pH of 4.5-6. On the other hand, I've read about many people successfully keeping them in pH as high as 7.5

As far as I know these are very advanced fish for the hobbyist. From a first look your pH is way too high for these. They're acid lovers and I'm talking extreme ends (as low as 4.0-3.5) and tolerate only very soft water. I would imagine this is your issue.

How bright are your lights? These fish appreciate plenty of shady cover.

+ 1 to ~firefly~, this fish only realy does well in low pH and hardness. They also need very sedate tankmates, which most of your fish are, but the fast swimmers like the rainbows could also be stressing them out.

By the way welcome to the forum, and your tank looks great, just from the two photo's!!

I wish my LFS had been a little more forthcoming with some of the nuances of these fish, but then again I should have done more research before purchasing them. I also wish I was able to set up a separate tank for them, as they quickly became one of my favorite fish in the tank.

My tank is running 8 36" T5-HO bulbs (two 4x36 lights side by side, for a total length of 72"), but there are plenty of heavily planted areas in the tank, which they usually stick to.

I appreciate the input, but it looks like I may have to get the net out and return these guys to the store :(

I agree with steeelr1, tank looks awesome...and sorry you may be returning the 2 gouramis...at least you learned a valuable lesson (trust YOURSELF, not the LFS guys), and kudos for keeping the gourami's well-being in mind

If they had been it would have cost them a sale. If you're serious about these guys go online and order a tds meter and some catappa leaf and see about getting RO water.

I doubt the LFS was trying to pull a fast one on me. They know me quite well, as I make all of my purchase through them. My guess is that they assumed I knew what I was getting into before I bought them.

If that's the case then you're lucky with your LFS.
