Got a new position at work which moved me from welding to a office. Id like to get a small 5g tank to put in the corner to enjoy during the day since imma become nuts. To cycle this tank faster, id use media from my current tank. The problem is, I dont know what "media" is My current filter I have a whisper I. It has a bag of something and then a black frame with some mesh on it. What would I use to seed my new tank with?
    First tank- 1 Mollys, 2 Platies and a snail - 10G

The media in your whisper filter would be the bag of something and the black frame with some mesh on it. If it is time to change the bag of something, it would probably work to seed the new filter.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Don't know this particular model but I'd say steal half out of the bag of something and use on the other tank. Voila, cycled!

If your ONLY filter in your home tank is that one with the filter cartridge, don't remove it, you will lose your cycle.

If the cartridge has the white filter stuff on the outside and is filled with carbon, you could slit that, and take out the carbon to use in the new tank as its likely very well seeded with material. Just place that in a small filter bag or a cut off toe of a clean new nylon knee high and stick it in the new filter.
2 10 gallon tanks, 1 20 gallon tank, 1 Fluval Edge, 1 29 gallon tank, and one backyard pond.

++ to all of the above. You should also have a new filter cartridge in the new filter for your new 5 gallon. Make sure you use that too as BB will grow on it as well and you'll be double covered.

any idea what you want to put in the 5 gallon tank?

The guppies should be fine in that 5 gallon, once it's cycled...and congrats on the promotion ! (I guess?)

Well, they already gave you great advice on what "media" to use. So maybe i can fancy you to stocking a pretty betta in that tank? :)
