If you have the room in 90 gal tank, you can add about 4 True siamese algae eaters. They eat all algae even the tough ones like brush. Just make sure they are compatible with your stock. They are peaceful and beautiful fish. They like to chase each other around.

The algae could be caused by the lighting or excessive nutrients in the water column.

I thought if anything I have a nutrient deficiency since I haven't been dosing my flourish regularly and I have such a low gh, but I guess the alar and diatoms have to form from something.

CL, so sorry to hear about the loss of your pets...I've had two of my three cats pass and the one remaining is 18 and has several health issues but we're doing all we can for him. It's never easy.

I would dose with the flourish comprehensive once a week on a regular basis and for the diatoms if they don't go away by themselves try adding some Purigen to your canister that worked for me.

    Thanks Judi,

Letting them go is the hardest part of having them.

Thanks for the tip about purigen. I had heard that it was actually so effective at cleaning up the water that adding purigen can actually remove some of the key nutrients that the plants really rely on. Have you heard anything like that?

It's supposed to make your water really crystal clear slap. I know many who swear by it. Someone once told me it makes it look like your fish are floating in an aquarium full of air.

That is when it is combined with a proper maintenance schedule of course. I'll have none of this where people say it replaces water changes. :p

I use it in my 45 gallon and it does make the fish look like they're floating in air but I also change 50%+ of the water weekly and keep up with filter maintenance.
Some people use purigen reactors and claim they can decrease the amount of water changes, have less algae and lower to 0 nitrates.
I would love to find a way to use it effectively in my sump because I can see a huge difference in the water between the two tanks.

Thanks for the info ladies...I agree with CrunchyLeaf though, NOTHING can take the place of (at least weekly) water changes, IMO...
