  1. Default Cleaning Lava Rock

    0 Not allowed!

I have a lava rock which has previously been used in an aquarium, but now it has been lying around the house for a few years.
It has a thin layer of dried up algae on it, and it is in general not very clean. So now I am wondering how to go about cleaning it.
I realize one cannot boil it, because it would break apart. How do I prepare this rock for reusing in my aquarium?

Before you soak it, throw it in the oven at 400* for 45 mins and let it cool down to room temp. Then i would soak ot in a vinegar water solution for a day or 2. That should take care of most of that algae. Then brush it down and give it few days soak in dechlorinated water. Should be fine aftee that
I wonder if i plant one of my tiger barbs would the demon seed grow to a full tree?

we use lava rock in our pond filter. to clean it, we soak it in warm water for an hour or so, then powerwash it outside. comes out clean as new.

Thank you all for your quick replies!

After soaking the rock for a few hours, several tiny "bags" of old snail eggs reappeared on it. I don't know if these can still produce live snails, but I have a feeling these snails can live through pretty much anything. So I think I might try throwing it in the oven for a while first to get rid of all the possible snail eggs hidden inside it, then giving it another round in hot water and a good scrub.

    Thanks ;)

The car wash? Hope you aren't planning on putting that in a tank with plants or fish. Not sure what the cleaning products will do to the water. Even if you think its gone its going to still be in the rock, its so porous.

Use a chlorine solution to ensure that any organisms are dead. One teaspoon (5mL) per gallon should be sufficient to sterilize. Once it has soaked in this solution for a day, rinse the rock thoroughly in warm water and then soak in a bucket of warm water (dissolves any remaining chlorine) for another day. Rinse one more time. If you want to be extra cautious, repeat the plain water soak with a new batch of water for another day.
