Thread: Cycling

So I am in the process of a fishless cycle in my 46 gallon bowfront. I added some porous rock substrate from a tank at my lfs to my filter 2 days ago, but my ammonia hasn't changed. Is it possible to take a couple days when seeding a tank to see a change in ammonia if not enough media is used to seed it?

It will take some time if you have ammonia in the tank. The balance of BB vs ppm of ammonia has to work itself out. Patients, it will cycle. I know it's tough waiting but it's worth it. Is the tank heated?

I honestly do not think there will be enough on the substrate to convert any measurable ammonia. Your fresh filter media will likely start growing beneficial bacteria and consume ammonia way before anything on the substrate can convert. In a fresh tank it could take several weeks before you start seeing a measurable decrease in ammonia and increase in nitrites. If you want to seed your tank using items from your lfs you should ask for some of their filter media currently in use. Personally, I would just do it from scratch and be patience to help ensure nothing bad comes over.

Yes the temp in the tank right now it's about 82 (will lower it before I get fish)

Good. Just dont leave the light on too long or you may have an algae problem before you know it.

ijankrom post gets a +1. Well said.

I haven't had the light on at all to avoid algae. I'm running an Aquaclear 110 power filter and have an air stone running so my oxygen levels should be good. I had originally asked for filter media but the stores in my area use sponge filters so the girl gave me some substrate. Guess I'll just keep patient and hope the stuff they have me helps in some way

Talked to the guy at the LFS that actually knows anything about aquariums and I am stopping in on Friday to pick up some used filter floss from their sump :) That should speed up my cycle better than the substrate the girl gave me! Should I swish the media in the tank water before placing the media in my filter? (I've read that can help)

Just put the media in the filter. Sometimes I recommend swishing filter media from one filter in tank water when you don't have enough to stuff in the second filter, but if you have enough it is best to just put it in the new filter.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Ok will do! Do I need to float the bag with the media/water from the tank it came from in my tank to get them used to the temp in my tank or will the bacteria be ok to put the media straight in the filter?
