Have you approached the person running the store and mentioned your issue? Maybe they dont know whats up with their stock after some months. You may have an ally your able to work with.
I had bought some coral from a store near me which had a nudibranch which I found during quarantine. The next time I was at that store I let the owner know and he was very thankful and the one large coral tank (400 gallons) was off limits until all was inspected. Some store managers/owners appreciate feedback.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Please remember; every keystroke has a consequence.

    Hey Limming,

Like you and Strider (and others on this board), I have also dealt with a bad strain of Tetras (two species, in fact). I had purchased 12 Black Phantoms and 12 Serpaes over a year ago for my 75gal tank (my first additions). They would die off one by one over the year until I decided to not stock these species anymore and try something else. I now have 3 Serpaes left, while the rest of my fish are doing perfectly well.

I tried finding a cause for their deaths for the entire year - attempting one medication to the next, thinking it was one thing or another... but nothing would work. I eventually chalked it up to bad stock, due to possible mutations from inbreeding. These were purchased from Petsmart and I've purchased other fish from Petsmart, without the same problems. I have 2 Raph cats, 3 golden wonder killis, 8 Oto cats, an Opaline Gourami and a Crowntail Betta (not all in the same tank) that are all doing perfectly well.

That being said, I've now resorted to purchasing most of my fish from online breeders/suppliers. Since the change in suppliers, I haven't had any problems with weak stock and disease outbreaks.

So, while not all problems stem from bad breeding, I think many problems can... and in your case, I bet that's exactly what's happening.

Could you actually tell the abdominal swelling on your blood fin's? You mentioned symptoms, could you list them for us. Besides the coloration thing you did not mention much about any other symptoms. Actually the color thing probably is irrelevant.

Yep I've seen the swollen abdomen before on some its the classic pine cone effect on some others its just the swelling then death.

Kevin- I've looked into ordering fish online before, the only thing stopping me is the price of shipping. I just don't want to pay at minimum 15 bucks for shipping for the wet spot (the only place I'd order from based on your guys experiences). Even with the risk it fits my budget more to buy from the local petco.

How about PetSmart. At least in my area I find PetSmart does a better job taking care of their fish then Petco. To many bad experiences with my local Petco.

I don't have a PetSmart around here. My only other options are to drive about an hour away for shops or pay for shipping.
