The more common clams that are kept in the hobby (Derasa, Maxima, and Sqamosa clams) will certainly outgrowth a 20 gallon tank in time.
One thing to keep in mind if you do find a suitable sized clam, is that they will need good and stable levels of Calcium, Magnesium and Alkalinity. As they consume a lot of these elements out of the water, you would more than likely have to be dosing supplements once or maybe twice a day to maintain the water parameters. If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
