  1. Default Public Service Announcement - Freeze Dried Blood Worms

So just wanted to do a quick PSA... It turns out it isn't uncommon to be allergic to Freeze Dried Blood Worms... and yes... I learned the hard way

So I had a coupon for petsmart $10 off $70 purchase and figured my dog food is like $65 so why not try some blood worms for the apistos. I get home, open them they way I open most things, pull the seal off with my teeth (first mistake), fish the fish some and put the food away. Well I start sneezing, just figured it was a sneezing fit (second mistake) and I rub an itch I had in my eye (third and biggest mistake). Well needless to say the next half an hour was me complaining about my eyes itching and just not feeling good until my fiance freaks out because my eyes are all but swollen shut... she asks what I had done, we narrow it down to the food, and then she asks if I washed my hands (nope.)

So two benedryll and passing out later I woke up saturday with my eyes still recovering and promptly returned the blood worms...

Bloodworm allergies are fairly common. I have heard that once they start they only get worse, and some people have needed to be hospitalized because their allergic reaction was severe. For years I used to occasionally feed bloodworms to my fish. Not that long ago my fingers started to itch and burn a little after touching the bloodworms. That's when I found out they can cause an allergic reaction and I stopped buying them and threw away what was left. It could have turned out a lot worse and I am glad you are ok.

People say if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all... Then they wonder why am I so quiet.
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?

yea, i had no idea.. i had fed blood worms to a betta when I was much younger, but these looked much different. Either way. No thank you. I picked up some tubiflex worms to try for them and didn't notice anything off with them
