Thread: Breeders!!!

    Default Breeders!!!

So, I've decided to take this hobby to the next level - and I suppose that would typically mean breeding fish, which is what I intend to do. Recently, I purchased two additional 20gal Long and one 40gal Breeder tanks, during Petco's $1/1gal sale. I set them up and insta-cycled them with some borrowed media from my 75gal and 20gal Betta tanks.

I then purchased 4 Caleco BN Plecos, 12 Sterbai Corydoras, many more RCS (which readily breeds like crazy in my other tank, already), a pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides "Super Red", and a pair of Apistogramma panduro. I don't necessarily plan on keeping this thread updated with minute-to-minute updates, like I did my 75gal tank, but I do plan on posting success stories and maybe things that work or don't work. I'll also update with pics every now and again.

And, to get us started, I'll post some pics of the kids involved. Most wouldn't stay still tonight, but I was able to get one lonely Cory, a very still RCS, and the pair of Apisto cacs. (though, separated), and a quick shot of the biggest pleco (right before he went into the driftwood log I have for them).

Here's the pleco I could get:

Here's the very well behaved RCS:

Here's the lonely, yet stubborn Cory:

I know what you're thinking... "What kind of shot is that?! His blasted head is covered by Christmas Moss, for Santa's sake!" I know, I know... but I couldn't get a good angle and none of the other Cory's were behaving. I had to prove that I actually had them in my tank, though. ;P

Here's the ever elusive Apistogramma panduro:

Yes, yes... another "proof of life" picture. ;] They exist and so does Sasquatch... and the Chupacabra!

To finish up, I decided to bring back one of my favorites (though much smaller than my previous batch) - the always awesome Apistogramma cacatuoides (Super Red flavor)!!! I loved my old cacs... but they were bullied to death by my evil GBRs (who, ironically are now dead, as well). (sadface)

Here's what I believe to be the female:

    Hi there!

One of the reasons I love Cichlids... they have such awesome personalities. I always feel like they're studying me, too.

Here's a side-view of the supposed female - already a pretty girl, but she has a LOT of growing to do (she's very small at the moment):

Here's the male, strutting his superior colors (already - again very small):

I mean, seriously? There's a reason why I love this species... Love those bright colors with the awesome design in the finnage. Such beauty.

    Anyway, hope you enjoyed!

Nice pics, Apisto's were your favorites when I first joined the forum. I remember how bumbed you were when the Rams "murdered" them awile back.

Thanks Lee! Yep, they were and still are my favorite. Love those little guys, though I must say the Black Ruby Barbs are an amazing species, as well. It's hard not to like everything I have... but the Apistos are definitely inquisitive creatures, which makes them quite interesting to me - plus, they just look amazing.

I wish you all the success with your new project.

Here's a short video of one of my favorite Apisto.

Haha!! Kind of ironic XD I have a pair of Apistogramma trifasciata. Pics of them and their tank are in my journal here. I love A. trifasciata. They have gorgeous colors and are amazing fish. Mine have learned to come to the right, front corner of the tank when the see me as that's where I feed them. They've also been trained to eat from my fingers. They're awful parents though and only the mother raises the fry.

@KevinVA I never like cacatuoides. They always looked like an apisto X guppy hybrid. I just never really fell for them, but to each their own. I chose A. trifasciata for many reasons mostly including its turquoise color and size.

I love apistos, just haven't had luck with them. Trying a pair of borelli and the poor male is always bullied by the female lol
