  1. Default Fill before starting ?

I just purchased my first canistr filter and I'm confused as to whether or not I should fill it up with water before I power it up or should I let it fill up on its on ? I'm thinking it should be full first so the pump won't have to work so hard on its initial start up . I have plenty of seeded media to place in it . I'm assuming I should dump the charcoal and replace it with good stuff from another filter. It came with ceramic rings , should I place them in an empty media bag that has been in my other filter for about 9 months now ? I'll probably have more questions after ya'll give advise for these . Thanks for your time.

I would believe you fill it first, so that the impeller will not be treading air and overheat. That is at least how the eheim and fluval that i have used work.

For your first start you may find it easier to siphon fill it. This may help prime the pump if you don't have a model with a manual pump on it. Don't run the pump until it is full tho. I had a hard time starting the canister the first time as I couldn't get it to pump due to there still being air in there. So siphon filling it - start the siphon filling into the canister by drawing on the outlet hose - will, in my experience, fill the pump completely so it starts right up when you plug it in.

you can take the carbon out if you don't want it, but save it in case you ever need to remove meds. Put whatever you want in it, thats the cool thing about canisters. the ceramic rings are just more surface area for good bugs to grow.
