Thread: Tetra food hogs

  1. Default Tetra food hogs

I've got 6 glow light tetras in a 10 gallon tank.

2 of them are bigger and hog most of the food. They are aggressive and chase off the littler ones.

2 of them are in the middle and manage to get enough food even though they aren't as aggressive as the first two.

2 of them are quite timid and hide behind plants or run away when I put in some food. I try to also put some food closer to where they are and hope they get to it before the big ones, but sometimes they seem too scared to even go for the food because of the larger bullies.

It's at the point where I know I am over feeding because 4 of the fish grab food and then spit it out but I have to keep trying to give food to the other two and I am having to siphon twice a week because of the extra food.

Any ideas short of trying to remove the two smaller ones to eat and then putting them back after?

    1. Try distributing food over a large area that cannot be defended by a few fish
    2. If the tetras are all you Haverhill the tank, get some more. The dominant fish will not be able to defend the food from all the others and should just give up and focus on eating.
I don't think that taking the weak out to feed will work. Capturing fish, as mundane as it is for us probably feels worse than an alien abduction or kidnapping to them. By the time you have them caught and in a separate container, they will be so freaked out that eating will be the last thing in their minds.

I would agree with distributing the food over a large area and also getting larger school. Outside of that there's really nothing else I think you can do. I don't think a fish will starve itself to death just to stay away from a bully.

My Blackshirt tetra's where like your fish in size, 2 lg 2 middle and 2 small when I first got them. Though the aggression I saw most of the time was the smallest towards the two larger ones. Quite fascinating to watch this little guy chasing the bigger ones.

Since then I now have 3 lg 3 middle and I would say they all eat very well. They've adopted. Some will come to the water surface to get food as I'm adding to tank, the others will stay back and just under them about 4 inches waiting on those pieces that start falling down. They know how to get what they need. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Sinking tablets is another way to go, putting them in different areas of the tank.

Ok thanks guys, I'll keep trying to spread out the food and look for some sinking tablets.

If that doesn't work, I'll maybe look at picking up a couple more.
