    Hi steeler1,

The 40 gallon is done every Saturday, I'm guessing st least a 60% change, maybe a bit more....the 10 gallon is every Tuesday, about the same amoumt

I don't know why it is stuck in my head that for PWC's "the bigger the better", but until now I have not had one single bit of problem with these larger changes

What do you recommend?....what determines how much water you guys change in your tanks on a REGULAR basis, not for cycling, disease, etc?...I want to stick with once a week, but I can change my habits (turning off filters, etc) while doing water changes if it will still reap the same benefits.

I made a mistake in the gas that is the problem, it is nitrogen and not oxygen that causes gas bubble disease, as I explained elsewhere I was in a hurry and well past my bedtime, sorry for the mistake and thanks to Taurus for correcting it. We all know how I dislike misinformation, especially when it is from me.

Whether I said the wrong gas or not, the issue is the same, and precautions should be made to ensure it doesn't happen again. There is no need to go overboard though, just a few simple precautions are all that is needed. Just be careful with the temperature and be sure the surface is agitated during water changes.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I would do 30% per Satuday in the 40 and stay at 60% in the 10, your plants will take up the difference in the 40, IMO and you are not overstocked.

Only 30%, wow, that won't take NEAR as long as it has been, LOL...the actual emptying of the tank took the longest, since it was gravity-fed with the Python, out the front door, and into buckets, which after inspection for wayward fish or shrimp, get dumped into some potted plants

If I only do that amount, once a week like you say, I could actually leave the filter and heater running the whole time...the waterfall from the spraybar won't stress the fish much, I'm hoping

This is what works for me as I said, in the 75 gal I only to 25% weekly, usualy on Moday and 30% in the 50.

I typically do a 30-50% pwc (depends on how much I'm paying attention - the 40-50% is unintentional, usually ;P) every week in my 75 & 40, and I've never had a problem. 30% will be fine. The problem comes when you skip a week. =X

Thanks guys, 30% it is, and I'll leave the filter running to provide agitation and good gass exchange...with the filter running, do I still need the airstone running, to?...I know lots of people don't even use them except for certain circumstances

I always keep my filters on, but when the water gets too low I'll turn off the valve, so the turbulence doesn't get too much for the fish. If you're only going to do 30%, there's really no reason to turn off the filters. You don't need an airstone running, either.
