I'm lucky that my tanks are in the basement family room so I have extra space. For my 45 gallon I placed a Brute Force 32 gallon container next to the tank and fill it with tap water, added a heater to match the tank temperature and also an airstone (I also add crushed coral to the container to buffer my pH due to low kh). When I'm done siphoning I use a pump to refill the tank.

Oh I see, I keep forgetting you have a basement....extra space is minimal at my house...you have a nice set-up, a bit envious over here, lol

BTW, good to hear from you again, have not seen you here in awhile
Thanks man, appreciate it. Glad to be back. Funny how much you realize you missed this stuff, once you get back from a hiatus.

I know what you mean....I like hanging here with my friends, laughing and learning, and having someone to share the occasional panic attack with.

Slap, I'm so sorry about your tetras. I leave all tank equipment running - filters, airstone, heaters - while doing a PWC. I also match my RO/DI water temp to my tank temp when making my water and refill the tank within 15-20 minutes of making the water. While adjusting the dGH and pH, I stir the made water to mix in the chemicals, so maybe this helps release any gases.

We have all learned from your loss. Major bummer.

Thanks Laura, I appreciate the kind words...I only turn off the filter for two reasons, I like doing large PWC's when I can, and the water level in the tank sometimes dips lower than the filter pick-up, so I don't want to suck up any air into the filter...also, with the water level that low, the flow from the spraybar may stir up the sand substrate and stress the fish, too...I am going to start running the airstone while re-filling after a PWC, and I am going to start turning the filter back on sooner

I turn the inline heater off during PWC's while the filter is off, since there is no flow through the heater and it can overheat

Do smaller water changes more often?
When in doubt, do a water change.

Glad everything is fine for you today slap, and Kevins smaller water change suggestion may help. How much to you change per week? Or what is your routine?
