Yesterday I ran by the store on the way home to get a gh/kh test kit and I was so excited about it that my husband said he was going to have me committed.
Now I ask you, what's so wrong with that?

1.82 drops per gallon or 2 if you want to round and make life easier.

Thanks Spardas...I'm going to use a 1/2 gallon pitcher, not sure how many it will take...I guess I can put in a gallon, add 2 drops, add another, etc until it's at the level I want

For the amount of prime:
you say you are adding about an inch of water to the tank. The footprint of a 40B is 36 x 18 inches. So, 36" x 18" x 1" is equivalent to about 10,620 cubic centimeters (sorry, my mind works in metric) which is 10.6 liters, which is about 2.8 gallons. Let's call it 3 gallons. Prime is dosed at 2 drops per gallon, so you need 6 drops of prime.
However, if you are planning on using a pitcher of 1/2 gallon, an easier "safer" way to do it is to add 1 drop of prime to each pitcherful before adding it to the tank. You should need about 6 pitchers, and use 1 drop of prime in each pitcherful. The advantage is that you add the prime to the water BEFORE the water enters the tank, so you completely dechlorinate the water before it even touches your tank.
In any case, for 1" of water you should need about 6 drops of prime.
