Default 2 months away from home!! What to do with my 20 Gall goldfish tank?

    0 Not allowed!
hi all -- this is my very first post. emergency!!
i have to leave unexpectedly for 2 months, I have a sick son in another state.
I have no time to arrange for a person to come and take care of my goldfish, one thats knowledgeable enough to make the necesarry H20 Changes, filter changes, feeding correct amts, etc. I experience alot of power outages here, as its tropical storm season. If power goes out and the person can't get the filters up and running again, that would be bad. Water evap is another issue.

how do I manage this? We will be going up in an motorhome RV so I will have electricity and water, that's not a problem. My problem is I dont have room for this large a tank. there is very little space. I will have 2 large dogs with me and another person.

    i'm thinking this:
buy a good size cooler with a lid from Rubbermaid.
take the 3 small goldies out of their tank with most of their water and place in the cooler.
Change the water every 1-3 days, 25-50%
use a bubbler stone w/ airpump for aeration and /or possibly one LG filter
Make sure the water is always dechlorinated/treated same way I treat at each change....

does this sound feasable? any suggestions? Has anyone ever gone away for a long time? I'm frantic with worry about my beloved goldies.
    thank you.

This is what I would do except you should probably change water each day while traveling, if you can use the filter you have on the tank use it, if not an air stone while traveling. When you get to where you are going buy a bigger tank and set it up.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

also a 20 gallon isn't a large tank, most type of goldfish need at least 70 gallons.
you could return the gold fish and take the 20 gallon with you and get fish who don't get huge and live in a 20 gallon tank.
do you know how to cycle?
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

+ to Honeybadger. You've worked out a good solution

another option that might be less stressful for you and your fish, is there any chance your local fish store would take the fish in for you while you're gone? i know that in an emergency like this, mine LFS would work something out.
Any chance there's a local fish club that might have a member who'd be capable and willing to come to your home and take care of them?

In any event - good luck on all counts. Hope everything goes well with you son.
